Following nationalisation, the decision was made to build locomotives incorporating the best features of designs produced by the four constituent main line companies i.e: GWR, LMS, LNER and SR. In total, twelve different classes ,totalling 999 locomotives were constructed with the intention that they could be used on all regions of British Railways. The first voulme in the series deals with the various policy decisions and the Pacific Classes.
